  • Holiday Open House Member Appreciation
    This two-day member appreciation event celebrates the opening of the winter exhibit and includes live music, seasonal activities, holiday items in the Garden Store, and fresh-cut wreaths and greens. Matthaei-Nichols members receive an additional 10% off Garden Store purchases (20% total) all weekend. Free admission.

  • Holiday Open House at Matthaei
    Join us for the opening of the holiday exhibit 50 Shades of Green - A Dynamic Look at the Color of Nature. This weekend features an open house and member discount days. Arb & Gardens members receive an extra discount off items in the Garden Store. On Saturday, November 30, the Spinners Flock hosts its annual sale 10 am-4 pm. Sale includes yarns, handcrafted clothes, ornaments, dolls, and more. One of the favorite sales of the holiday season! Sunday, December 1 from 1-1:30 pm we've got Midnight Blue, the U-M Women's Glee Club, performing in a free mini-concert. All welcome!

  • 50 Shades of Green - Holiday Exhibit at Matthaei
    Green is the color of nature but there’s more to it than meets the eye. Using examples from the conservatory’s collection and touching on art, science, psychology, research, environmental issues, and literature, 50 Shades of Green illuminates the many meanings of “green.” Plus, seasonal flower display, inspirational ideas for holiday tree decorating, interpretative stations, holiday items for sale in the Garden Store, and more. Free admission.

    Nov. 30-Dec. 1: Exhibit opener and Holiday Open House, 10 am-4:30 pm. Free admission.

    Nov. 30: Spinner's Flock Holiday Sale, 10 am-4 pm. Free admission.

    Dec. 1: Musical performance by Midnight Blue, the University of Michigan Women's Glee Club. 1-1:30 pm. Free admission.

    Dec. 8: Photo-Synthesis: Capturing Nature's Beauty - Free photography workshop with the UM student group Michigan Photography Club (space limited), 10 am-2 pm. Free. (Register on our 50 Shades event page.)

    Dec. 8: Green Holiday Crafts - Free DIY holiday craft workshop with U-M Environmental Crafts Organization. 1-3 pm, drop in. Free.

    Dec. 14: Kids holiday greens workshop. 10 am-noon. Fee applies.

    Dec. 21: A Visit with Father Christmas - 11 am-2 pm. Free.

    Jan. 4, It Is Easy Being Green. The Creature Conservancy with live animals and information on adaptation. 12-2 pm. Free.

  • Midnight Blue - UM Women's Glee Club Mini-Concert
    Warm up in the conservatory and enjoy a free festive vocal performance by Midnight Blue, the University of Michigan Women's Glee Club. This talented group will be singing a few holiday treasures as well as "green" melodies. The free mini-concert is part of Matthaei Botanical Gardens & Nichols Arboretum's holiday open house festivities and kick-off for the conservatory exhibit 50 Shades of Green: A Dynamic Look at the Color of Nature. Free.
