  • Eco-Restoration Workdays - Arb
    Enjoy and learn about the beautiful natural areas at Nichols Arboretum as you contribute to our restoration efforts. Education and tools provided. Individuals welcome to drop-in; groups register in advance. Volunteers under age 18 must submit a permission form prior to participation; those under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Questions?   • Super Seedlings - A Little Green Thumbs Program
    Discover the magic of seeds! Some seeds are only as big as a grain of sand and others are gigantic! How does a tiny sunflower seed grow to 8 feet tall? Learn how the sun, water and warm spring days encourage little seeds to become big seedlings and full-grown plants. Explore the types of seeds that will grow well in your home garden and plant seeds to take home. A Little Green Thumbs program: Spring 2013 kids’ gardening classes at Matthaei. Fees cover materials and activities. $8.00/child

  • Growing Shiitake Mushrooms on Logs
    Learn how to grow delicious and healthful shiitake mushrooms in this class conducted by Shane Mulholland, owner of Forest Organics. A symbol of longevity in Asia because of their health-promoting properties, shiitake mushrooms have been used medicinally by the Chinese for more than 6,000 years. More recently, their rich, smoky flavor has endeared them to American taste buds. Learn how to properly inoculate cut logs to grow the mushrooms. Each participant will take their own shiitake log home with detailed instructions. Fee: $45.00. Advance registration required. Presented by Forest Organics. Info & registration: forestorganics.net.
