  • Great Lakes Gardens Opening at Matthaei
Please join us for the opening of the Great Lakes Gardens, five contiguous themed habitats planted with their native flora. From majestic Great Lakes sand dunes and limestone bluffs, to prairies, oak savannas and inland forests, few regions are blessed with such beauty or so great a range of ecosystems and indigenous plants. Uniquely, the Great Lakes Gardens will re-create many of these special ecosystems and their resident flora, including Great Lakes endemics, native orchids, oak species, prairie wildflowers, and woodland wildflowers. In the gardens a series of accessible pathways, boardwalks and overlooks invites visitors to view plants up close that they might never encounter in the wild, while interpretation will help them understand why conservation of this unique diversity is so important and so relevant to current issues of sustainability and environmental stewardship.

As the living material of the gardens is planted over a period of at least two years, expect to be wowed this spring by the physical re-creation of Great Lakes habitat. Here you'll find ecosystems mimicing the coastal areas of the Great Lakes with their sand dunes and limestone plains, rugged environments for species that sometimes grow nowhere else.
