Mission of Cultivating Community:

Develop and adopt a closed-loop food system using gardening, composting, education, and research to improve human, community, and ecological health; gain access to local food; and divert food waste through composting and recycling.

Goals of Cultivating Community:

  • Create a University-based closed-loop, sustainable gardening system using pre-consumer food waste to be recycled via vermicomposting with the ultimate goal of providing healthy, locally-grown produce for the community.
  • Design and maintain Cultivating Community gardens on the University campus and at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens as a way to educate the public by way of demonstration gardens, signage, and hands-on learning.
  • Participate in outreach opportunities to further educate groups of all ages and diverse backgrounds on the positive aspects of vermicomposting, food waste recycling, and closed-looped gardening.
  • Maintain mutually beneficial partnerships with University-related groups such as faculty, staff, and students as well as units such as the Grounds and Waste Departments and Dining Services. Partner also with broader community organizations such as Food Gatherers and Growing Hope.
  • Initiate learning and growth through volunteer work and coursework by encouraging participation by a diverse group of students and faculty.
  • Develop the necessary systems and infrastructure to maintain this project’s components in a financially stable, educational, and sustainable manner.
