MCSP Kickoff (First UC102 Lecture): UC 102 begins in 1360 East Hall next Tuesday, September 2, which is the first day of classes at the University. However, only the UC 102 lecture will meet that day, and discussion sections will begin the following week.

Please join us after UC 102 in the Couzens reclaimed dining space (on the first floor, ask your RA or Peer Mentor for directions) for snacks, to meet your fellow MCSPers, and to get your fabulous MCSP t-shirts!

Date: Tuesday, September 2nd
Time: 6-8 pm (and beyond)
Location: 1360 East Hall (for lecture) / Couzens Old Dining Hall (for get-together)

PB&U Meetings: If you have any suggestions for events that PB&U could possibly put on, please join them at their weekly meetings. Any MCSP student is allowed to vote for different proposals, and contribute new ideas for a year full of wonderful events. Even if you have comments and improvements that can be made on previous events put on by PB&U, the meetings are a chance for you to freely express your opinions.

Meeting Dates: [Tuesdays, 7pm] Sep 9th

Community Service

Natural Area Preservation: Natural Area Preservation (NAP) works to protect and restore Ann Arbor's natural areas and foster an environmental ethic among its citizens. This involves conducting plant and animal inventories, ecological monitoring, and a variety of stewardship projects in Ann Arbor parks. One third of NAP's field work is done by volunteers, so community involvement is vital to the success of their conservation efforts. On Friday we will be removing invasive species. Please remember to BRING YOUR MCARD.

Friday, August 29th, 2008

Warm Fuzzies: Since 2001, community groups and individuals have made and donated thousands of colorful fleece blankets to patients receiving chemotherapy at the UM Comprehensive Cancer Center. The comforting blankets quickly became a hit with patients, both children and adults. On Friday we will be assembling these blankets. No experience required!

Friday, August 29th, 2008

CROP Hunger Walk: CROP stands for Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty. The Walk unites community members in walking together to take a stand against hunger in our world. Together we raise awareness and funds for international relief and development, as well as local hunger-fighting. (More information at http://www.churchworldservice.org/CROP/)

Registration begins at 1:15 pm and the walk begins at 2:15 pm. This year's walk will be taking place at the First United Methodist Church, Ann Arbor. A post-walk meal will be served back at church, so please plan to join us to celebrate our success!

Sunday, October 12th, 2008

SHOCK (Students Helping Others Choose Knowledgeably): An entirely student-run program, SHOCK began under the name of the MCSP Drama Troupe during the 2001-2002 year as a way to get MCSP students involved in the greater Ann Arbor community. Using original skits focusing on substance abuse, SHOCK travels to Ann Arbor fifth grade classrooms encouraging students to remain drug free. The skits are both educational and entertaining, featuring Sponge Bob, Batman, and Shrek! In 2003, the University of Michigan presented SHOCK with the Ginsberg Award for Service and Social Action. Now in its fifth year, SHOCK looks forward to continued success.
Coordinator: Melanie [melneu@umich.edu]
