Eligibility

The Michigan in Washington (MIW) program accepts students from all schools and majors at the
University of Michigan. Applicants must have reached at least sophomore-status by the time they
apply and should have completed at least three courses in their majors. Applicants should have a
strong interest in public service. Students who participate in the MIW program will usually have
a cumulative grade point of at least 3.0.

Important Dates

Submit a hard copy of your application and required supplementary materials by 4 pm, Friday,
October 2, 2009 at 5700 Haven Hall. MIW will conduct interviews of promising applicants
during the week of October 12 and will notify all applicants of whether they have been
accepted into the program by Friday, October 23. Enrollment in the program and a $300 housing
deposit are due by Tuesday, November 3, 2009.

Please note that all accepted students who decide to accept the offer of admission must
attend preparation classes in the evenings of October 27, and 29 and the afternoon of
October 31. This will apply toward your credits during the winter semester in Washington.

Applications Should Include

• A completed application
• An unofficial transcript
• Two letters of reference from professors or graduate student instructors. Please collect
  these from your references in sealed envelopes and submit with the application.
• A 500-600 word essay. Please describe (1) how you hope the MIW program will enrich
  your college experience, (2) how your previous experiences make you well-suited for this
  program and (3) how an internship in Washington would fit with your career aspirations.

  interested in applying? Please be specific.
