Overview

MIRA aims to foster excellence in astrophysical research by catalyzing cutting-edge research projects in areas in which U-M offers particular expertise, such as star- and planet-formation, cosmology and galaxy clusters, high-energy astrophysics, instrumentation, or magnetohydrodynamics.

By choosing pressing topics within these areas for semester- or year-long research campaigns, we seek to focus a critical mass of thinkers here and at our peer institutions on these issues, and to exploit the synergies made possible by diverse perspectives and skill sets.

This year’s conferences and workshops, and the research themes they will launch, include:

  • Disks & Planet Formation | Unveiling the early stages of planet formation and evolution

  • Interdisciplinary Instrumentation | Promoting cross-fertilization of novel technologies for scientific inquiry

  • Bridging Observation and Simulation in the Local Group | Using astrostatistics and big data to understand the Milky Way and its surroundings
