There are two main methods of connecting to the Internet within the Chem Building:
1) Wireless (These are considered non-univeristy networks by the library) Mwireless
2) Wired (University Networks)
Public IP number requires your MAC address to be registered with the IT Deparment.
Private Network - please stop by and talk to us about your needs.
There is a network jack in the room and my computer is registered but I still do not have a network connection, what's up with that?
Most likely the network port is not active. Please submit a workorder with the room number and jack number that is having issues.
If a cable is needed immediately, we can provide a loaner cable until your new one arrives.
I understand that the Department/College University purchases software such as Maple, MatLab, etc. Can I put these applications on my personal computer?
Unfortunately, no. The Computer Showcase does have student versions for purchase. The sotware we provide is for installation on University owned / NuIT managed machines only where NuIT has an admin account and does the install. NuIT does not have media to hand out.
On OS X or Linux, open a terminal (Applications->Utilities->Terminal on OS X) and enter "ssh -Y firstname.lastname@example.org". Once logged in, enter "matlab", "mathematica", or "maple -x". If Mathematica seems to hang at the splash window, click the window and press the escape key.
On Windows, download PuTTY and connect to scs.itd.umich.edu using your uniqname and password, and enter "matlab -nojvm", "maple", or "math" (for Mathematica). These commands will run the text-only version of each program.
The College of LSA has contracted with PC-HELPS. Contact information & other supported applications can be found in the HOW TO section under pchelps.pdf HOW TO
The Cambridge Structural Database System (Conquest, Mogul, Mercury) has an expired license on Thorium - Will it be renewed?
The Cambridge Structural Database is now hosted by the University Library.
My ChemOffice says it's time to renew. How do I get a new license code?
Our License agreement requires that individuals need to re-register their personal copy of ChemOffice. This can be done at the following Web Site:
They will want your e-mail address so they can send you new license codes and instructions.
Assuming you have a current UMS user name & password click here: New UMS Accounting Application Install the Plug-in found under the "Messages" tab
If you are using Mathematica on campus through the site license, you can request a home-use license for your personal machine here: http://url.wolfram.com/1Ad7Ve./
You'll need your organization's site license number, which you can get from your on-campus installation of Mathematica (select "Help" > "About Mathematica"). If you need any help locating that number, just let me know.
Your students can also use Mathematica at home if your department participates in the site license. Feel free to contact either IT or me if you'd like details to pass along to your students.
If you're not currently using Mathematica on campus through the site license and want details on how to get involved, let me know what projects or courses you have in mind for Mathematica, and what machines you'd like to equip. I can outline how your department is involved in the site license and how you can take advantage of what is set up on campus.
Just drop me a quick note if you need any help accessing Mathematica on campus or at home, or if you have questions about how best to utilize Mathematica for your particular projects.
