The Peking University (PU) and Beijing Normal University (BNU) programs both begin with a mandatory seven-week intensive language training session focused on developing language skills at the intermediate and advanced (non-native) levels. In addition, some non-credit bearing electives in Chinese culture may be available. UM students on the BNU fall semester program continue taking courses in written and spoken Chinese. Academic year program participants do so at BNU or, after the summer program, move to Peking University. At PU’s College of Chinese Language and Culture, the language and literature curriculum emphasizes improvement of spoken and written Mandarin and deepening one’s understanding of Chinese society and culture. Students with sufficient proficiency (at least 3 years university-level Chinese) may take regular university classes (taught in Chinese) at PU or BNU.
