Designed for students with an interest in art history and French language, the program offers three content courses plus 7 hours/week French language instruction. The content courses will be taught by UM faculty exclusively for program participants. For the Winter 2009 program, in addition to the 4-credit hour core course, “Paris by Site,” students will enroll in two 3-credit hour art history courses, taught by Professor Howard Lay: “Alchemists of Revolution,” which focuses on revolutionary visual culture from 1789 to 1880; and “Modernism/Modernity,” an examination of the relations between modernist painting and emergent forms of mass culture from 1871 to 1914. French language classes will be offered through the Institut Catholique. Most students who have completed French 231 are able to fulfill Michigan’s four-semester language requirement with a course taken at the Institut Catholique.
