The Office of International Programs has established a fund to provide travel awards to UM faculty to visit OIP program sites. These awards may be used in conjunction with other travel grants and other travel purposes (e.g., attendance at an international conference).
The purpose of these awards is to allow faculty to develop an understanding of study abroad and its fit into a particular department's undergraduate curriculum at Michigan as well as knowledge of a particular program site operations and facilities through visits to program centers and host universities.
These awards of ($1,000, $1,500, or $2,000) are intended to cover most of the costs of faculty visits to sites where the OIP is currently operating programs. The amount of the award will vary according to the cost of transportation, with the higher amounts given for those destinations where travel costs exceed $1,000.
In visiting the program site, the faculty member will be expected to meet with colleagues at the host university, on-site program staff or faculty, and Michigan students currently enrolled in the program. He/she may also be asked to provide academic advising to Michigan students and clarification about Michigan academic policies to on-site staff and faculty. The faculty member should allow at least a full day for these activities.
To apply, the faculty member should draw up a brief proposal for the OIP, outlining the proposed dates of the trip and the benefits to the home department and its undergraduate program of increased knowledge about the particular program's operations. Awards will be made to the faculty member's home department and all financial accounting will be handled by that department.
The OIP will give preference to proposals from LS&A faculty members-either in those departments which send significant numbers of students abroad or from those departments from which OIP hopes to draw more students.
