OIP Home

Students living with a host family need to remember this family is opening their home. Be respectful of the family and their home. Be sure to keep the family informed when you will be away. Some families will be more hospitable while others may be more reserved. This may be the first time that families have had a foreign student live with them and they may not know what to expect. Others may be very familiar with this arrangement from previous hosting experience. Students should be aware of different standards of living. Students should observe and learn as much as possible about the host family’s norms, rituals, and behaviors from the start. Students have a great opportunity to discover cultural “otherness” and to practice speaking the local language.
