Am I an International Student?
At UM, students with non-U.S. citizenship are referred to as "international students."
As an International Student how can I attend The University of Michigan and who should I contact?
If you are from another country (a non-U.S. national), you may apply to study at the University of Michigan (UM) as either an:
- International Degree Student:
Enrolls in a formal graduate or undergraduate degree program and contacts the appropriate Undergraduate or Graduate admissions office.
- International Guest Student:
Registers only for individual spring and summer term courses and contacts the appropriate Undergraduate or Graduate admissions office.
- International Non-Degree Student:
Registers for individual fall or winter term courses and contacts the appropriate Undergraduate or Graduate admissions office.
- International (non-degree) Exchange Student:
Takes fall or winter term courses through a formal, institutionally-sponsored exchange program agreed to by the UM and the individual's home university. Students who wish to participate in an exchange are not enrolled in formal degree programs and contact their home university in order to apply.
How does an OIP-Sponsored Exchange Program (#4 above) work?
- The OIP administers exchange programs on behalf of the College of Literature, Science, and Art (LSA)
- There are currently partnerships with 20 overseas universities.
- A student may apply to the UM from an eligible institution for one or two academic year terms during the fall and/or winter, but not spring/summer.
- A student must apply through their home university study abroad office. The home institution will individually consider your nomination as an exchange student.
- Please Note: The OIP will not accept applications submitted directly by students.
