Students should consider keeping a journal while overseas. Many people purchase notebooks specifically made for this purpose. Soft cover may be preferable as it is light and can easily fit into a backpack. Keeping a journal is becoming a popular tool that many academic programs are using for students to reflect on their experiences abroad. Journals can promote and enhance personal development, self-awareness, and exploration during what may turn out to be a life-changing experience.

Writing in a journal about experiences overseas is also a good way to remember your international travels. It is a personal choice how one utilizes their journal. Some people write about specific events while others choose to describe the scenery, architecture, people, customs, etc. The important thing is to write about whatever interests you and you would most like to remember. Keeping a journal is also a great way to pass the time on a train. It can serve as a support mechanism and a way to get over the initial feelings of culture shock. Writing your thoughts is also a good way to link academics to out-of-class experiences. Finally, you may want to write a story or an article when you return home and your journal can serve as the foundation.
