Differences in gender presentation and/or sexual orientation can present special challenges to students living abroad, especially if a person is going through or anticipating a period of transition such as coming-out or gender reassignment. The OIP strongly recommends that students learn as much as possible about prevalent attitudes in the culture of the host country to prepare for any personal, social, legal or safety issues. Think of ways to use your language and coping skills to bridge the gap with others and do not be afraid to ask for help or reach out for support.

The UM Office of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Student Affairs (3200 Michigan Union) can help identify valuable resources and support services. Visit their website or email them at lgbta@umich.edu.

The OIP also strongly recommends that students familiarize themselves with the website of the Lesbigay Special Interest Group of the National Association of Foreign Study Advisors (NAFSA).
