New Passport Application Instructions
- Passport Facts:
- Currently, it is taking about 4-6 weeks (April 2009) to receive your passport after you submit your completed application.
- You can check the status of your passport application online after you apply.
- To obtain a passport for the first time, you need to go in person to one of over 9,400 passport acceptance facilities located throughout the U.S. You need to bring with you:
- two passport photographs
- proof of U.S. citizenship (Original birth certificate or previous U.S. passport)
- valid form of photo identification such as a driver’s license
- You need to apply for your passport in person if you meet any of the following situations:
- You are applying for a U.S. passport for the first time
- Your previous U.S. passport was lost, stolen, or damaged
- Your previous U.S. passport has expired & was issued more than 15 years ago
- Your previous passport has expired and it was issued when you were under 16
- Your name has changed since your passport was issued and you do not have a legal document formally changing your name
- You must complete the Form DS-11 Passport Application
- The passport application fee is $75. The execution fee is $25. The total is $100. Make sure to bring your check book since you will have to write out more than one check.
- Your passport MUST be valid for six (6) months after you return home from your program.
- Passports are valid for ten (10) years if you are over the age of 16.
