Dear Alumni,
Thank you for your patience - the judging has been completed at last!
The OIP received 122 photo submissions for the 2003 contest! We appreciate everyone who took time to gather their memories pictorially.
Below are the images, their photographers and the stories behind what made our winners in the following categories: People of the Host Country, Places and Students.
Another OIP thanks to our judge: Larry Cressman. He is a Studio Art Faculty Member for the UM Florence Summer Program and an avid (and talented) photographer!
| Grand Prize Title: Monks in the Making Location: A very small monastery near Songpan, China Photographer: Christine Chan Statement: These two young boys are being raised in a small monastery in a very remote part of Sichuan Province, China. They will grow up to be monks. When some young boys playing outside the monastery told them about my digital camera, they were very eager to get their picture taken. As soon as I took it, they ran over to see themselves on the camera screen. |

| 1st Place: People of the Host Country Title: Shepherd of Kerry Location: County Kerry, Ireland Photographer: Brian Yeager Statement: A shepherd watches as his trained dogs keep the flock of sheep together. |

| 2nd Place: Places Title: Huanglong, China Location: Sichuan Province, China Photographer: Christine Chan Statement: Located in northwest Sichuan Province, Huanglong (Yellow Dragon) is famous for its beautiful landscapes including the clean and clear lakes, snow-covered mountains, valleys and natural forests. It was named a UNESCO world heritage site in 1992. |
|
| 3rd Place: Places Title: Thai Water Taxi Location: Railway Island, Southern Thailand Photographer: Ellyn Swemba Statement: I jumped on and off one of these long tail boats while island hopping in Southern Thailand. Railway Island was nearly abandoned, which this picture captured, when I was there. |
|

Jessica and I had to work hard to convince these 13-year-old girls we could do some of the difficult work, such as carry a basket of palm nuts. |
