Sir Harold Evans, noted author, speaks at OS Speaker Series By Alexander Neagoe (Class of '07) On
Wednesday, November 16,2005 OS Speaker Series guest speaker Sir Harold Evans delivered
a talk on innovation to an audience of 800 students, faculty, and community members in Rackham Auditorium.
This United Kingdom native is well-known as editorial director of US News & World Report and
for his book/PBS documentary They Made America . Evans focused on innovators spanning from John
Finch (1790s), inventor of the steamboat to Larry Page and Sergey Brin (1990s), designers of Google.
Many innovators who have "shaped America and the world in which we live" are often overlooked,
for they have had simple occupations (seamstresses, cobblers, and bicycle mechanics) and they do
not make the same money that inventors do. The key to the success of these innovators is
a crucial element of the American spirit - an unwavering faith in their ideas and in themselves.
The OS Speaker Series is sponsored by the Organizational Studies Strategic Fund. This talk was co-sponsored by Organizational Studies Program, the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program, and the Women in Science and Engineering Program. |
