Curriculum

The OS curriculum contains several courses offered by the OS Program, but the majority of the curriculum is made up of courses drawn from a broad array of university departments. However, not all courses at Michigan are “organizational”, and thus not all courses qualify as candidates for the OS curriculum. Organizations are defined as collections of individual efforts coordinated to achieve things that could not be achieved through individual action alone. Courses included in the OS curriculum can cover a very broad range of academic fields and topics, but must be in some sense “organizational” in their content or approach.

Because the curriculum is so rich and diverse, Organizational Studies has created a planning tool called Concentration Pathways, designed to allow concentrators to navigate more clearly through the array of courses available.

Students must apply for and be accepted into the concentration program. Students are declared into the concentration by the concentration advisor only.
The 2009 application will be available in September, 2008.

Prerequisites to concentration. Students must complete an introductory course in economics, psychology, and sociology. Courses that serve as an introduction to the field include Economics 101; Psychology 111, 112, 114 ,or 115; and Sociology 100, 101, 102, or 195.

Students should be aware that additional prerequisites are required for many of the upper-level courses in the OS curriculum. Depending on their particular area of interest, students may wish to complete Econ 102 and/or entry level courses in Political Science, Communication Studies or Women's Studies as they prepare to apply to the OS program.

Concentration Program: The concentration in organizational studies requires a minimum of 37 credits, distributed as follows:
  1. Core requirements. 2 courses required, minimum of 6 credits.
  2. Cluster Requirement. Minimum of four courses total, with two courses in each cluster. 12 credits minimum.

    Cluster A: Organizations and Individuals
    Cluster B: Organizations and Society

  3. Senior Field Research and Quantitative Skills Requirements: Analysis, Research and Practice in Organizations. (4 credits of quantitative skills and 3 credits of field research). The field research and quantitative skills requirement is designed to provide both quantitative analytic and experiential learning opportunities for research, analysis, and practice in a wide range of organizational settings.

    A. Quantitative Skills.
    B. Senior Field Research: Prior or concurrent enrollment in the quantitative skills requirement is strongly recommended.

  4. Cluster C. 3 courses required, minimum of 9 credits.

  5. Electives. Only required if needed to reach the 37 total credits required for the major. Any course in the OS curriculum may serve as an elective.
