Leadership in Non-Profits Experience: Chicago
Monday, October 20, 2008
10/22/08; Chicago, IL

During the University’s Fall Break, the Institute will send a small group of OS students to Chicago to participate in the first Leadership in Non-Profits Experience. On the first day, students will get an up-close look at the day-to-day operations and management of a non-profit organization as they are each placed in a different organization. Some of the participating non-profit organizations are:

• Women Employed (http://www.womenemployed.org/) - In 2007, Anne Ladky, Executive Director was a Twink Frey Visiting Activist at the The Center for the Education of Women at UM. The mission of Women Employed is to improve the economic status of women and remove barriers to economic equity.

• Chicago Cares (http://www.chicagocares.org/) - Chicago Cares creates unique volunteer experiences for individuals, businesses and organizations to help combat many of our community’s most urgent needs.

• Chicago Sinfonietta (http://chicagosinfonietta.org/) – Chicago Sinfonietta aims to remove the barriers to participation in, and appreciation of classical music through its educational and outreach programs that expose children and their families to classical music, and by providing professional development opportunities for young musicians and composers of diverse backgrounds enabling new, important voices to be heard.

• Erie Neighborhood House (http://eriehouse.org/opportunities.asp) - Erie Neighborhood House empowers Latino and diverse low-income communities to reach their fullest potential with a range of award-winning educational programs for all ages. Our mission is to promote a just and inclusive society by strengthening low-income, primarily Latino families through skill-building, access to critical resources, advocacy and collaborative action.

• Jobs for Youth (http://www.jfychicago.org/jfy/jfy_main.html) - The mission of Jobs For Youth (JFY) is to help young men and women from low-income families become a part of the economic mainstream; and, in the process, to provide the business community with motivated, job-ready workers. JFY's core program includes pre- employment training, job placement, GED instruction, and supportive services.

• The Department of Cultural Affairs for the City of Chicago (http://www.cityofchicago.org/CulturalAffairs) - The Department of Cultural Affairs for the City of Chicago is dedicated to enhancing the cultural life of Chicago and affirming the value of the arts to the social and economic fabric of Chicago. The department does this by offering free exhibitions, performances and programming; supporting the work of artists and cultural institutions; and promoting Chicago as a center for culture.

On the second day, students will be able to interact directly with a leader within the non-profit field during a special luncheon hosted by Organizational Studies Leadership Committee (OSLC) member Andy Lansing. While in Chicago, students will also connect with OS Alumni in the area. This unique opportunity was created in partnership with OSLC member Robin Tryloff.

All interested students should submit a paragraph to Tiffany J. Purnell (tpurn@umich.edu) explaining (1) why you are interested in participating in this opportunity, (2) what you will contribute to the experience, and (3) what you expect to take away. Though we cannot guarantee you will be placed in your organization of choice, please include any organization in which you may be especially interested.

Please send your paragraphs by September 22nd at 5:00 p.m.
