WiLL (Women in Leadership Lessons): Lady Leaders in Literature
Tuesday, February 17, 2009
BLI; Pendleton Room, Michigan Union

The Women in Leadership Lessons (WiLL) hosts four special guest speakers in the literary world to tell their stories: cultivating their interests, finding an entry-level job, working to achieve to their current position, and discussing difficulties and advantages on being a woman in the career world. In telling their stories, they will discuss how leadership has played a role in their lives and how they are a leader today: how do they advocate values? How are they an example in their industry? How do/did they overcome challenges?

Special Guests:

Nancy Shaw: A children’s author, famous for the Sheep in a Jeep series.

Betty DeRamus: A former columnist for the Detroit news who also wrote Forbidden Fruit, a book of true love stories on the Underground Railroad. Betty was in Africa covering the story when Nelson Mandela was released from prison.

Dorene O’Brien: A short story author who teaches at Wayne State University.

Lolita Hernandez: Lolita worked at the Rouge Plant in Detroit and wrote a book about it.

The first part of the evening will be a panel with our four guest speakers. The second part of the evening will be a “Mix and Mingle” with desserts and drinks. This set-up enables guests to hear each speaker’s “big picture” ideas on leadership in their career while also being able to ask specific questions. The evening will be open to all undergraduate students and faculty.

Please RSVP to Alyssa Jacobson at alyannej@umich.edu by Monday, February 9th.

WiLL (Women in Leadership Lessons): We aim to enhance the leadership skills of driven college women by connecting them with successful women in a variety of fields. We are a committee within the Barger Leadership Institute in Organizational Studies within the University of Michigan.
