Internships Through Organizational Studies |

What Is an Internship?
More than a part-time job, an internship is "a short-term work experience in which you receive training and gain experience in a specific field or career area. An internship can be paid or unpaid and can vary in hours and length" (from Career Planning & Placement website), and can be done any time of year. Internships are designed primarily for students to learn from practical experience rather than for earning money; the best pay an internship can give is an apprenticeship-like experience. Summer is the most common time to do an internship, but it can be done during the school year as well, if you are willing to balance it with classes. Why Do an Internship? Internships provide opportunities to apply the knowledge that is gained in the classroom. Students who do internships acquire valuable experience that employers look for in job candidates, and interns will be able to draw from that experience once in the workforce. Being in the field will not only provide experience that looks good on a resume, it also allows students to learn what to expect from specific careers after graduation. Planning Your Search Finding an internship is much like finding a job. A strong resume and good interviewing skills are necessary to getting hired. Students are responsible for finding their own internships, but Organizational Studies passes on internship opportunities to students via email as we become aware of them. Career Planning & Placement (3200 SAB) has an extensive list of internships and resources available to help you in your search. It is important to have a timeframe in mind as you enter the process of finding an internship. Often employers will begin interviewing and hiring summer interns around February or March, but more competitive internships may begin interviewing as early as December. Here is a suggested timeline for planning your search. You may adjust the timeline accordingly for fall or winter term internships.
OS Internship Events November 15, 2007 - OS Summer Opportunities Night Course Credit Credit can be given for academic work done in conjunction with an internship, but not for the internship itself. Internships involve very little formal academic content, but when the internship is combined with an independent study, you can receive credit for the project. Read the Independent Study and Internship Workbook for more information on how to create an independent study project in conjunction with your internship. Internship Awards Each year OS interns will have the opportunity to apply for an internship award, to be given in April for summer internships, to defray some living expenses or other related costs students may incur during their internships.
