Fall 2009 ORGSTUDY 490 Opportunity with new OS Professor Elizabeth Armstrong Tuesday, September 8, 2009 Organizational Studies For students interested in gender issues and/or research on higher education, OS has another research opportunity for the Fall 2009 semester. Course Description: As an undergraduate student, the university is the organization that most consequentially shapes both your everyday life and possibly your future trajectory. As a participant on this research team, you will work with Professor Armstrong and a group of your peers on a project investigating the social organization of undergraduate experience. Armstrong is in the process of writing a book based on a five year ethnographic and interview study conducted at Indiana University. She and her collaborator observed life on a women’s floor of a residence hall in 2004, and interviewed most of the 50 women who lived on the floor each year for the next five years. You will help with the analysis of the more than 200 interviews and hundreds of pages of ethnographic field notes they have collected. As a group, and in the context of smaller individual projects, we will investigate the structures undergraduate women encountered as they moved through the university. Our early meetings will be focused on acquiring substantive, theoretical, and methodological knowledge and skills, primarily through intensive reading and discussion. The reading will range from detailed information about the project, to classic readings in the sociology of education, general organizational and sociological theory, and key methodological texts. Students will then focus on individual topics and dive into analysis of the data. OS Credit: Juniors receive Cluster C credit; Seniors may receive either Senior Field Research or Cluster C credit. Application required: Please send a few paragraphs to me at elarmstr@umich.edu explaining your interest in the course and why you would be a good contributor to a research team. Also, attach a copy of your resume. Maximum number of students: 6 |
