OS Internship Opportunities

UM Faculty Senate Office
I have an opportunity for Fall 2004 to pass on to you that many of you will be excited about. There's a position that has been created for OS students in the highest levels of the University of Michigan. This is a learning opportunity similar to an internship. It's unpaid, but I think the benefits you'll receive are well worth it.

SACUA is the University Senate Committee, which makes policy decisions that affect the entire university. The SACUA office is in need of some students to help with research and staff support. As a part of your work there, you will interact with an executive officer and work closely with the faculty Chair on determining the resource materials needed for each of the committee meetings. Your involvement will place you in the midst of some of the most important decision-making processes at the University of Michigan.

See below for more detailed information. If possible, a two-semester commitment is requested. In your application, please include a paragraph stating why you are interested in the position.

To apply: Submit your resume by email to Mary Mandeville (mandevil@umich.edu). She will consider students anytime between now and September.

The Faculty Senate Office (SACUA) provides support for central faculty governance activities including support of the Senate Assembly committees, which advise the executive officers on issues of University policy. The Senate Assembly, SACUA, and their committees are mandated by the Regents to provide faculty input into the policy making process. The executive officer advisory committees are made up of faculty members and students, and meet periodically throughout the academic year. For more detailed information on faculty governance please see the SACUA website. For information on each of the Senate Assembly Committees please click here.

UM Human Resources
Building Great Places to Work would benefit greatly from two new intern projects, with each project using 2-4 students as a research group, for a total of up to 8 students. We would expect an average of 3-4 hours/week over most of the term. We would have a preference for interns wanting to work both fall and winter terms. (Note: This is in addition to the survey that is already envisioned by OS student Joanna Eisen, and Joanna might be open to having someone join her on her project as well.)

Students would work in research teams or study groups, and would have some choice of subject. The following are possible projects, and in fact I am sure we can think of more when the Steering Committee next meets on September 10. We are also open to having students propose a topic for our approval.
· Organizational communication in the electronic age: reviewing our existing website, researching the best in organizational communication, and proposing enhancements to the site. Promoting the site among UM faculty and staff.
· Recognition: several university units have unique recognition programs in place. Students could design and conduct a survey of staff in those units to determine how effective these programs are, and could do a lit search to propose additional types of recognition.
· UM Business School and the workplace: Recent books by two Business School faculty members have great relevance to "building a great workplace" - Paula Caprioni's The Practical Coach, and Jane Dutton's brand new Energize Your Workplace. With Caprioni and Dutton both present on campus, a student or a group could mine those books for their implications for University workplaces, and could touch base with the authors at some point in the term.
Each team will be expected to produce a report including useable proposals for improvement of the working climate at the University of Michigan.

Successful candidates will
· Be entusiastic about looking at the University as an organization, an employer, and a workplace, rather than just as a school.
· Be excellent team players.
· Have excellent written communication skills.
· Be reasonably skilled with Microsoft Office.

Unfortunately, we have no funding for stipends this year. If a student happens to have a work/study grant, and would like to use it here, we will budget our share of the award.

Students should submit their resumes to
Sally Johnson
Director, Alternative Dispute Services
The University of Michigan
2072 ASB, 1009 S. Greene St.
Ann Arbor, MI 48109-1432
(sallyj@umich.edu).

Responsibilities:
LSA students in Organizational Studies or Communication Studies will be given the opportunity to interact with an executive officer and work closely with the faculty Chair on determining the resource materials needed for each of the meetings. The student could have the responsibility for providing all the staff support for a committee including, setting agendas, researching issues, and maintaining a record of the meeting proceedings.

Examples of past committee work include development of a written policy document such as the "Teaching Principles and Responsibilities," or gathering input on revisions to policy documents such as the "Statement of Student Rights and Responsibilities" and bringing it to the committee and executive officer for review and comment. Current issues under discussion include possible changes to University policy such as the proposed policy on Faculty-Student Relationships and changes to the Sexual Harassment Policy, and other policy issues.

Students in Organizational Studies may have interest in the Senate Assembly key issue committees, some of which are looking at changes to employee benefits programs, faculty compensation, and the recruitment and retention of minority faculty.

Students in Communication Studies may have interest in supporting the Advisory Committee for the Vice President for Communications.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Strong organizational skills in addition to excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality of information gathered during the performance of assigned tasks

  • Attention to detail

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience with creating and posting web documents
