The Department of Philosophy offers one of the leading philosophy graduate programs in the world. The Department emphasizes broad and intensive training in the analytic tradition across the main areas of the discipline. Graduate students and faculty alike benefit from a highly collegial philosophical community.

The Department sponsors a full schedule of talks and visits by philosophers elsewhere. Each year, graduate students organize a topical spring colloquium and serve as commentators on the papers. Two graduate students serve as representatives to the Department's Executive Committee.

Graduate students enjoy excellent facilities: graduate study spaces, a separate GSI-student meeting room, a computer room, and Department commons room, as well as the Tanner Philosophical Library.

In addition to full packages of financial support for as many as six years, in a unique program the Department undertakes to award a ten-month postdoctoral fellowship, without teaching obligations, to its own Ph.D.'s who do not initially secure an academic position.

Graduates have achieved impressive success on the job market, with many receiving offers from highly ranked philosophy departments across the English-speaking world.
