The deadline for receipt of applications for both admission and financial aid is Tuesday, January 7, 2015 for all applicants. The Department admits new Masters students for entrance only in September. All decisions are made by March 15 and posted online.

To apply to the Masters program, fill out an online application via the Rackham Graduate School. If, for some reason, you are unable to use the online resources, please contact us by e-mail. Please use the following code when completing line 13 on the application: Code 00388.

In addition to the Rackham Graduate School application, each applicant is required to send the following directly to the Department of Philosophy.

  • One copy of official or unofficial transcript from undergraduate institution should be scanned and uploaded at the Transcript page of the application.  Note: Official transcripts need to be sent to the  Rackham Graduate School only if you are provisionally accepted by the Philosophy Department (usually in March).  Directions to submit your transcript to the Rackham Graduate School can be found here.
  • Three letters of recommendation written with a clear indication of the writer's academic position. Letters are to be sent to the Philosophy Department and can be sent by regular mail or the online application. If you are submitting letters of recommendation by paper click here to access the Letters of Recommendation form. If you are submitting recommendations via the online application, make sure that you register your recommenders when you fill out the online application.
  • Statement of purpose (1-2 pages).
  • A sample of  philosophical writing (15-25 pages in length). (Papers cannot be returned.)
  • You may also (optionally) supply your scores on the aptitude portions of the Graduate Record Examination. (Not the "philosophy achievement" test, however.) To have your scores reported directly to the University of Michigan, please use code number 1839.

You are fully responsible for the submission of a complete application. Failure to submit all the information and materials requested will result in your application not being considered for that year's admission class.

Once Rackham has received your application and application fee, you will receive an e-mail directing you to the Web Application Status page. This page records materials received and posts admissions decisions.
