Professor Evans's research focuses primarily on topics in ancient Greek philosophy, with an emphasis on ethics, moral psychology, and the philosophy of mind. He has published articles on Plato's account of the ethical status of pleasure and pain, on Socratic intellectualism, and on the Epicurean justification of friendship. He is currently at work on a book on Plato's critical response to various versions of relativism, materialism, and atheism. Professor Evans is also collaborating with Nishi Shah (Amherst) on a research project in contemporary metaethics. He has held fellowships from the Princeton University Center for Human Values and from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
