Dr. Mashour studied Philosophy as an undergraduate student at St. John’s College, Annapolis (Great Books Program). He completed his M.D. and Ph.D. in Neuroscience at Georgetown University and was a Fulbright Scholar in Neuroscience at the Freie Universität in Berlin. Dr. Mashour completed his training in Anesthesiology at Harvard Medical School and Neuroanesthesiology at the University of Michigan Medical School. He has authored more than 100 articles and edited 4 textbooks on anesthesiology and the neurosciences. His primary scholarly interest is in the multidisciplinary study of consciousness. He has enjoyed productive collaborations with philosophers and is interested in the philosophy of mind as it relates to consciousness. Kant’s “Critique of Pure Reason” has been a major influence in his neuroscientific work on consciousness and mechanisms of unconsciousness.
