Over the past decade, physics has undergone spectacular development, with major discoveries across its various sub-fields. Some of these discoveries have become enablers for technological progress, propelling the revolution in telecommunications and whole new industries in medical diagnostics. Other discoveries are more fundamental, offering deeper insights into the workings of Nature, and opening new physical vistas for exploration and application.

As we enter the new century, the field stands intellectually vital and vigorously supported by government and industry. Our students are in demand and can choose from a wide spectrum of employment opportunities. Physics is an integral scientific component of the liberal arts environment and contributes to scholarly activities of the College and the University in a fundamental manner. As a Department, our mission is to enhance the goals and ideals of the University by providing an incisive and enriching education for our students; by making lasting contributions at the forefront of human understanding, and by communicating the excitement of scientific discovery to our fellow citizens.

The main University of Michigan campus is in Ann Arbor, 40 miles west of Detroit. Ann Arbor combines the charm of a small city with the sophistication of cities many times its size. Regarded as a cultural center of the Midwest, it offers numerous opportunities for recreation and enjoyment.

Our Goals

  • To excel in the areas of physics we practice
  • To provide an outstanding education for our students
  • To assure a nurturing environment for the professional advancement of our faculty and staff
  • To shape the intellectual growth of the institution
  • To disseminate scientific knowledge to citizens
  • To be a resource base for Michigan industry

External Research Funding (2007)

  • Over $12.3 million
