University of Michigan C. Wilbur Peters Collegiate Professor of Physics Ctirad Uher was one of this year's recipients of the prestigious Friendship Award presented by The People's Republic of China to foreign experts who have made outstanding contributions to the scientific development in China. On the afternoon of September 30, 2011, Premier Wen Jiabao and Vice Premier Zhang Dejiang of the State Council met at the Great Hall of the People to present the winners with their prize and to congratulate them personally for their efforts benefitting China's reforms and modernization drive.
Professor Uher earned this award through years of training Chinese post-doctoral students and graduate students at the University of Michigan Physics Department, through exchanges with Chinese faculty, which resulted in new experimental methods, and through his long-time collaboration with Wuhan University of Technology (WUT) in Hubei Province of the P.R. China.
The 50 winners of this year's award came from 21 countries, involving industry, agriculture, energy, environmental protection, education, technology, health, culture, sports and other fields. Since 1991, a total of 1,199 foreign experts from 62 countries have received this award.
