The University of Michigan has one of the country's premier programs for the training of undergraduate and graduate students in physics. The Physics Department has abundant facilities for instruction in physics and offers a wide variety of experimental and theoretical research programs open to undergraduate and graduate students. Welcome to the University of Michigan Physics Department!
Undergraduates concentrating in physics have several degree choices:
• B.S. in Physics
• B.S. in Interdisciplinary Physics
• A.B. in Interdisciplinary Physics
• minor in Physics
There is also an Honors Concentration in Physics. Interested undergraduates may also want to look into work in medical physics (a promising path for pre-med students) in the Applied Physics program*, or in the Engineering Physics program*.
The analytical and quantitative thinking skills you will develop as you work toward any of these degrees will be of great value in many different careers. Most physics majors at U-M follow one (or more) of three paths after graduation:
• graduate work in physics or another field
• employment in industry, software development, or associated field
• professional school in medicine, business, law, or associated area
The undergraduate program web pages offer an introduction to why physics graduates remain at the forefront of science and technology advances, an overview of degree programs offered within the Department, an introduction to research opportunities for undergraduates (along with profiles of the work done by some current and past undergrads), and an outline of career opportunities in physics.
Student Services Office
The staff of our Student Services Office is dedicated to serving both undergraduate and graduate students. If you have questions that aren't answered by browsing the web pages, answered on our frequently asked questions page, or if you just want to speak to someone directly, please do not hesitate to contact one of us.

Interested in Visiting the Physics Department to see first-hand the reason for our excitement?
Contact Racheal Higley, physics.sso@umich.edu and she will be happy to set up a visit for you. Many students like to combine a Department visit with a campus visit. If that’s what you would like to do, make arrangements with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions* and then call Racheal Higley. Most visits involve a meeting with a concentration counselor, a current student, and a lab tour. It would be most helpful if you could notify us ten days in advance of your arrival. We look forward to seeing you!
We are also happy to host groups of high school students and their teachers. Providing we have ample notice, we can usually schedule a “Demonstration Extravaganza,” lab tours and a brief talk by the Associate Chair of Undergraduate Studies. These department visits can range in time from one hour up to three hours, depending on your time constraints. If you are interested in scheduling a visit, please contact Racheal Higley.
