    Vanessa is interested public opinion, socialization, political participation, identity and race & ethnicity politics. Her research focuses on the broadening of one’s social group identity and Latino immigrants’ political socialization processes. To this purpose, she seeks to employ multiple methods including survey experiments, semi-structured in-depth interviews and statistical analyses to test her hypotheses. 

    Another project she is currently working on involves Obama's advertising and the impact of racial attitudes on evaluations of his candidacy among white respondents (with Vince Hutchings, Spencer Piston & LaGina Gause).

    Vanessa is a recipient of the Ford Foundation’s Predoctoral Fellowship and a research grant from the Gerald R. Ford School's Center for Public Policy in Diverse Societies.

    As co-president of Political Scientists of Color, a Michigan graduate student organization which promotes diversity in the academy, Vanessa creates a sense of community between students and faculty.
