What happens to laws and rules when they leave the hands of those who author them and get out into the real world and get dirty? What reasons do we come up with for breaking them? These questions poke at law's intersection with other aspects of our day-to-day lives: out groups and associations, our informal norms and practices, our (sometimes idiosyncratic) senses of justice and fairness, even our individual senses of self. My current research investigates these ideas in amateur baseball players. Illicit use of agents is against NCAA rules, but widespread. Through interviews and ethnographic work, I've discovered that players' self-image plays a prominent role in their decisions to break rules.
