    Ashley Reid Brown's dissertation explores how local elected officials develop and engage their social networks.  She conducts in-depth interviews with officials representing school boards and city councils in three cities in the Midwest. Through these interviews, as well as participant observation and social network analysis, her research:

    1. Addresses the connection between local officials' personal and political lives;

    2. Offers insight into the future actions of political candidates;

    3. Complements the existing literature on agenda-setting by providing a framework for understanding the political priorities of officials;

    4. Advances the literature on race, gender, and local policymaking; and

    5. Explores candidate emergence, committee selection and assignment, and policy outcomes at the local level.
