  • About

Matt’s research and teaching center around international relations and security with a specific focus on the dynamics of civil wars and occupations, as well as the role of domestic opinion in determining conflict outcomes. His dissertation explores the difficulties that confront democratic states combating insurgent movements in territories they occupy overseas. He is also involved in a number of other research projects that examine the effect of the media’s portrayal of different types of casualties on public support for interventions abroad and identify the domestic institutional determinants of civil war onset and duration. Matt teaches classes on civil wars, international relations, and research design. From 2005 to 2008, he served as a legislative assistant working on foreign and defense policy for a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
