Matt's primary research interests are in international relations, with a particular focus on violence both across and within borders. His dissertation will explore the dynamics of insurgencies located in urban areas, an environment that existing literature has viewed as inimical to rebel success. He is also interested in the impact of American political institutions on battlefield strategy and tactics. From 2005 to 2008, Matt served as a legislative assistant working on foreign and defense policy for a US Senator. He received a BA in Political Science from Boston College in 2001 and a MPP from the Ford School of Public Policy at the University of Michigan in 2004. He also served as an intern in the Bureau of European Affairs at the US Department of State in 2003.
