My name is Davin L. Phoenix and I am a doctoral candidate in the joint program in Public Policy and Political Science at the University of Michigan. I will earn my Ph.D. in the spring of 2014. My research in terests include examinations of race, localized descriptive representation, and mobilization of marginalized groups. My dissertation integrates theories from literatures on race, emotions and behavior to scrutinize the relationship between political communications and individual motivation to participate in politics. The methodologies I employ range from survey research to experimental design. I am also interested in integrating aspects of community-based participatory research in my data collection. My work has been featured in 21st Century Urban Race Politics: Representing Minorities as Universal Interests, a forthcoming edited volume on minority mayors. Additionally, I have a number of manuscripts written in collaboration with professors and colleagues either currently under review or being prepared for submission. I am an alumnus of the Ralph Bunche Summer Institute and a recipient of the 2007 NSF Predoctoral grant.
I have a diversity of educator experiences, serving as a teaching assistant for an introductory course in American politics as well as for courses in the multi-disciplinary Program for Intergroup Relations. Additionally, I have independently taught an undergraduate course entitled “Black Americans and the Politics of Race in the Post-Civil Rights Era.” In addition to my teaching, I have served as a mentor in various capacities, from supporting and advising undergraduate students to aiding students preparing to enter the first year in graduate programs across various social science fields. I very much enjoy utilizing the tools of education and mentorship to empower others to critically engage their world and become globally responsible citizens.
