Jean-Thomas Arrighi defended his PhD dissertation in the department of Social and Political Sciences of the European University Institute (EUI, Florence) in February 2012. His thesis examined the relationship between territorial politics and migration in three cases of protracted nationalist mobilization, Catalonia, Scotland and Québec. He also holds an Mres in Social and Political Sciences from the EUI, as well as an MA in Contemporary European Studies from the University of Bath (United Kingdom). Between May 2012 and December 2013, he was affiliated to the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies (RSCAS) at the EUI, where he worked as a researcher within the European Union Democracy Observatory on Citizenship (www.eudo-citizenship.eu). He also taught migration-related seminars and lectures in a variety of European universities, including the Venice Academy of Human Rights (Italy), the University of Sienna (Italy), the University of Olso (Norway), the Open Society Foundation Summer Programme in Istanbul (Turkey), and the University of Lucerne (Switzerland).
His research interests lie at the crossroads of comparative politics, territorial politics, nationalism and migration studies.
