Peer Facilitators are undergraduate student leaders within the Project Community program. After being selected and trained, they take on a number of leadership responsibilities that provide opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Facilitate a weekly seminar: Peer Facilitators facilitate a weekly, 90-minute seminar of undergraduate students serving at the same community site. These are vivid dialogues reflecting on sociological concepts, incorporating the course readings and community service experience.
Liaison to a community service site: Peer Facilitators also help maintain a relationship with a designated community service organization. This is accomplished through approximately 4 hours of weekly service and through regular communication with the site contact.
Attend weekly program area meeting: Peer Facilitators attend a weekly program area meeting with other Peer Facilitators in their program area in order to discuss concepts, raise concerns and accomplishments, and work through site and seminar related issues with the Graduate Student Instructor assigned to that program area.
Peer Facilitators receive support through weekly 90-minute staff meetings involving fellow facilitators, Project Community staff, and the graduate student instructor for the program area. This is a space for Peer Facilitators to raise any concerns (or accomplishments!), discuss concepts and ideas with other student leaders, and work through issues relating to their seminars and service sites. Peer Facilitators are required to attend three days of training for their role, two days at the beginning of the term and one at the middle of the term.
Students have the opportunity to grow personally and professionally through the peer facilitation experience by:
- forming strategies to manage dilemmas in small group settings
- establishing professional relationships with local non-profit organizations
- exploring your identity and how it influences your experience in the classroom and community
- cultivating an understanding of service-learning education
- developing a personal philosophy
All Project Community Peer Facilitators are enrolled in either SOC 325 or SOC 395 and receive academic credit for their participation.
SOC 325: Sociology of Service Learning (4 credits) This course is for first term facilitators, using readings and writing assignments specifically designed for Peer Facilitators. Assignments are evaluated by the Faculty Sponsor. SOC 325 is graded credit. Students will need an override to enroll in this course. Permission is given to those who successfully complete the selection process. (An additional one credit of SOC 395 is available.)
SOC 395: Directed Reading or Research (4 credits) This course is for second- or third-term facilitators, and may be repeated for credit. This course has readings and writing assignments specifically designed for Peer Facilitators. Assignments are evaluated by the Faculty Sponsor. SOC 395 is graded credit. A combined total of eight credits of SOC 321, 389, 395 and 396 may be counted toward a concentration in Sociology. Students will need an override to enroll in this course. Permission is given to those who successfully complete the selection process.
