Barbara A. Oleshansky Memorial Fund
Description

A memorial fund was created in l984 by the family of Barbara A. Oleshansky, a Ph.D. from the Department of Psychology at the University of Michigan. The family intends the interest from the fund be used to assist outstanding women graduate students who demonstrate financial need. As such, we have established at least two Oleshansky Research Prizes of $500 each. Students can receive the award one time.

 Who Should Apply?

Female students who have achieved candidacy and demonstrate financial need to complete their degrees.

Eligibility

The award is designated to support outstanding women during a period in their graduate training (after successfully completing a 619 project) when they experience insufficient funding. The applicant must not be a past recipient of this award and must be in the regular 5-year funding plan.

Application Procedures

The Area Chair must submit one nomination to the Student Academic Affairs Office by November 9th. Applicants should check with their Area Chair to see if the Area has an earlier deadline date.

Interested female graduate students must submit to their Area Chair a two-page research proposal that outlines the following:

  • Previous research experience.
  • A plan for a specific research project.
  • Their need for a $500 supplement for research expenses and why other sources are limited.
  • A Curriculum Vitae.

Area Chairs should submit their nominee’s materials as noted above, along with a nominating statement, supporting both the student’s qualifications for carrying out effective research and her needs for financial assistance. Please submit materials electronically to psych.grad.awards@umich.edu.

The Psychology SAA Committee will review applications and select the award recipients.
