Description

In its continuing effort to recognize high standards in dissertation research, the Section of Psychology of the New York Academy of Sciences announces the 41st competition for the annual James McKeen Cattell Award for outstanding doctoral dissertation in psychology. The winner will be announced in April 2012 on the Academy website.

Eligibility

The competition is limited to graduate students of accredited doctoral programs who have either attained degrees or successfully defended their dissertations between July 1, 2011, and June 30, 2012.

Selection Criteria

Summaries will be assessed in terms of clarity of purpose and rationale; method and research design; results, with statistics as appropriate; and conclusions, with implications and/or applications. Following this review, the APA's Advisory Committee may request up to three copies of the dissertation itself, for final review by specialists.

Application Procedures

A summary of the dissertation should be submitted without personal or institutional identification according to the following guidelines:

• 1200-1500 words of double-spaced text.
• A page or two consisting of tables and figures; references and key words may also be added.
• On a separate sheet, list contact information for you and your faculty advisor.
• A Curriculum Vitae.

Please submit application materials electronically to psych.saa@umich.edu. The applications submitted will be reviewed by the Student Academic Affairs (SAA) Committee to select the dissertation that will be forwarded to the competition.
