CULTURE AND COGNITION FACULTY

- Kitayama, Shinobu, Director - Cultural variations in cogntion, emotion, and motivation. We have suggested that whereas daily practices and public meanings of East Asian cultures are organized around the models of self as interdependent, those of European American cultures are organized around the models of self as independent (Heine, Lehman, Markus, & Kitayama, 1999; Kitayama & Markus, 1999; Kitayama & Uchida, 2003; Markus & Kitayama, 1991). Moreover, we have suggested that many psychological processes are fostered and reinforced through actively participating in divergent cultural worlds and, as a consequence, these psychological processes become culturally contingent. Our effort over the last decade has shown substantial cultural variations in several domains. kitayma0309@gmail.com
