January 22, 2002 Casa Grande Valley newspaper article quotes Professor Christopher Peterson:

..."There's not some miracle going on," says Christopher Peterson, University of Michigan professor of psychology. "Rather, optimists simply act in different ways. They believe they're masters of their own fate."

Optimists live according to a code that sees them controlling their own health. Thus, these women and men exercise, follow a diet that is healthful and enjoy recreation and social interaction. Plus, importantly, they pay close attention to warning signs, the so-called "negative information."

Key to the edge maintained by the Oppies (for optimists) comes in their handling of life's inevitable stresses....
