Blinking in the sun, we diurnals re-emerge

Professor Theresa Lee is featured in a March 24, 2003 Ann Arbor News article about spring returning to the Midwest.

...Spring has finally sprung.

We could get out and enjoy the fresh air after a punishing, demoralizing winter. The city came to life again.

But I like the biological take of Theresa Lee, a University of Michigan professor of psychology, neuroscience, and reproductive science who studies circadian rhythms and how creatures respond to light.

Special as we think we are, Ann Arborites are just regular, everyday humans - diurnal animals that, with the exception of many pro athletes, are most active during the daytime. "We like it when things are light," Lee says.

So when we at last move beyond the darkness of winter and the days begin earlier and stretch longer and the weather breaks - watch out. Or, as Lee puts it, "We get an increase in activity from diurnal species." ...
