Translation, LSA Fall 2012 Theme Semester
By:
Wednesday, May 30, 2012

In fall 2012 the LS&A THEME SEMESTER will consider “Translation” in our community and in the world at large. Where do we encounter translation in everyday life? What is translation? Who translates? Why translate? What lessons do we learn in the process of translating? These are some of the questions that students and faculty will explore together at the University of Michigan, from a broad range of disciplinary, interdisciplinary, and international perspectives.

Coordinated by Department of Comparative Literature, the Fall 2012 “Translation” theme semester follows on the Winter 2012 “Language” theme semester, to continue critical and creative reflection on the interplay between languages and to consider the many ways in which we translate from one discourse, discipline, medium, or culture to another. In this wider sense, translation is at the heart of the mission of the university.
