Research and Teaching Interests

My research interests include affective neuroscience and hedonic psychology; emotion, motivation and reward; brain systems for liking and wanting sensory pleasures; disorders of desire such as addiction and eating disorders; appetite; executive brain systems of action syntax and neuroethology; I am interested in answers to fundamental questions, like:

  • How is pleasure generated in the brain?
  • What are the neural bases of wanting and liking?
  • How are rewards learned?
  • What causes addiction?
  • How does the brain distinguish pleasant from unpleasant?
  • How does fear relate to desire?
  • What is an unconscious emotion?
  • What goes wrong in action disorders (e.g., OCD or Tourettes')
  • How is real behavior produced by brains?
