Research and Teaching Interests
My research interests include affective neuroscience and hedonic psychology; emotion, motivation and reward; brain systems for liking and wanting sensory pleasures; disorders of desire such as addiction and eating disorders; appetite; executive brain systems of action syntax and neuroethology; I am interested in answers to fundamental questions, like:
- How is pleasure generated in the brain?
- What are the neural bases of wanting and liking?
- How are rewards learned?
- What causes addiction?
- How does the brain distinguish pleasant from unpleasant?
- How does fear relate to desire?
- What is an unconscious emotion?
- What goes wrong in action disorders (e.g., OCD or Tourettes')
- How is real behavior produced by brains?
