Research and Teaching Interests

My research interests include aggressive behavior and development of aggressive behavior in children, and my work on the role of media violence in the development of aggressive, violent and criminal behavior, especially among children and young adults is nationally known. I am also interested in social cognition and informational processing models of social behavior; multivariate statistics, structural modeling, growth curve analysis.

In addition to my appointment with Psychology, I lead the Aggression Research Program at the U-M Institute for Social Research, and have appointments as a Professor of Communications Studies and as Director of the Research Center for Group Dynamics of the Institute for Social Research.

Representative Publications

My books include Aggressive Behavior: Current Perspectives, "Television and the Aggressive Child: A Cross-National Comparison," and "Growing Up to Be Violent: A Longitudinal Study of the Development of Aggression."

Among my recently published articles is Changing the way children "think" about aggression: Social cognitive effects of a preventive intervention for early elementary school urban youth, published in the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology (2007 Feb Vol 75(1) 160-167), written with colleagues Nancy Guerra, David Henry and Patrick Tolan (The Metropolitan Area Child Research Group), and Longitudinal relations between children’s exposure to TV and their aggressive and violent behavior in young adulthood: 1977–1992 published in the journal Developmental Psychology (2003. Vol 39 No.2, 201–221), written with colleagues Jessica Moise-Titus, Cheryl-Lynn Podolski, & Leonard D. Eron.

Honors and Awards

I am a fellow and past president of the International Society for Research on Aggression. I am also a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, the American Psychological Society, and the International Communication Association.
