REGISTRATION POLICIES

The Psychology Student Academic Affairs office is providing the following information to help you as you register for Psychology classes.

IMPORTANT

STUDENTS MUST ATTEND CLASSES FROM THE BEGINNING OF THE TERM. THE DEPARTMENT MAY HAVE STUDENTS DROPPED IF THEY DO NOT ATTEND DURING THE FIRST WEEK OF THE TERM.

All sections of courses meet from the first day of classes, even if the discussion or lab section is scheduled before the first lecture. Students must attend class from the beginning of the term or risk being dropped from the class.

Psychology Waitlist Procedure (beginning Fall 2009)

All sections of all undergraduate courses have a waitlist (except courses that are “Instructor Consent,” First-Year Seminars, and Independent Studies).

After the Early Registration period, the Department will provide permission to register as seats become available in classes using the following guidelines:

  • 1. Upper level courses - seats will be offered to senior concentrators (85+ credits), then junior concentrators (55-84 credits), sophomore concentrators (25-54 credits), then non-concentrators. BBCS and Neuroscience students will be given priority for BBCS/Neuroscience eligible courses.

  • 2. Breadth courses - seats will be offered first to concentrators by class rank, then all others in waitlist order.

  • 3. 100-200 level courses - waitlist order with freshmen and sophomore students receiving priority.

Students will have 72 hours to register for the class before the permission expires. Being on a waitlist does not guarantee a spot in the class.

Be aware that the waitlist closes on the first day of the term. That is, students cannot add themselves to the waitlist once the term begins. Instructors will expect students on the waitlist to attend the class from the first day of the term if they still want to be considered for open seats.

All sections of courses meet from the first day of classes, even if the discussion or lab section is scheduled before the first lecture. Students must attend class from the beginning of the term or risk being dropped from the class.

Some instructors will choose to close the class on the first day of the term so that all enrollment requires permission. If the enrollment has not reached the posted maximum, instructors will have a process for admitting students who have been attending class.

Questions about enrollment and permission to register should be sent to psych.saa@umich.edu

Permission of Instructor

For classes which indicate Instructor Consent Required, contact the instructor for information about acquiring permission to register for the class.

Concurrent Enrollment in Stats 350 and a Gateway/Breadth Group Course

The Psychology Department will allow concurrent enrollment in Stats 350 and a Gateway/Breadth Course that requires Stats 350 as a prerequisite. If you are interested in this option, please fill out the form at the link below, indicating your top choices. You may choose up to three discussion sections of each Gateway/Breadth Group Course. The Gateway/Breadth Group Courses that require Stats 350 as a prerequisite are: Psych 230, Psych 240, Psych 260, Psych 280, and Psych 290. Permissions will only be given after students who have the enforced prerequisites have been given a chance to register.

Independent Study Courses

All independent study courses require instructor consent. Students have the responsibility of contacting instructors for permission into these courses. Before registering for a 400-level letter-graded independent study course (Psych 420, 421, 422, 423), students must have a proposal approved by the Psychology Committee on Undergraduate Studies and permission from an instructor. A proposal cover sheet and instructions are available in the Psychology Student Academic Affairs Office, 1343 East Hall. Note that all thesis courses (Psych 424, 425, 426, 427, 428, and 429) require that you apply and are accepted into the Thesis program before enrolling in any courses. Please see the Independent Study Course Information Link.

Reserved Seats

In order to give Psychology, Neuroscience, and Brain, Behavior & Cognitive Sciences concentrators an opportunity to register for classes they need to complete their concentration requirements, some seats in Psychology classes are reserved for these student groups. Additionally, some seats are reserved for students of specific class standing; senior, junior, sophomore, and freshman.

Class standing is determined by the number of credits earned toward a degree, and includes the number of credits being taken in the current term (per LSA Bulletin, page 13):

  • Freshman: fewer than 25 credits
  • Sophomore: 25 through 54 credits
  • Junior: 55 through 84 credits
  • Senior: 85 credits or more

All unused reserved seats will be released for general registration after seniors and juniors have had the chance to register.

Psych 331/332

For students who wish to take Psych 332 for their lab requirement, please note that you must take Psych 331 concurrently with the Psych 332. Psych 331 is the lecture/ULWR portion and Psych 332 is the lab work portion. Students who do not take Psych 331 & 332 together in the same term will not fulfill their lab requirement.

Transfer Credits

If you have credits that were transferred into UM from another institution, please note how it is being counted in LSA. For example, you will not be able to enroll in courses that require your transfer course as a prerequisite if they do not transfer exactly as the prerequisite course.

If the transfer course is listed on your transcript as “Psych Departmental,” you will need to have a Concentration Advisor evaluate this course, if you haven't already. Advisors will determine if the course will count for concentration credit or as a prerequisite. If you have already had a course reviewed and approved by a Concentration Advisor, then you will need to complete the following steps during registration only if a course in which you wish to enroll requires the transferred approved course as a prerequisite.

  • 1. Determine if the course you wish to enroll in has the enforced prerequisite similar to the transfer course you had approved (see above).
  • 2. If so, you will need to call or come to the Psych SAA Office once your registration appointment begins to obtain a permission (override).

Permissions will only be given if:

  • a. Your registration appointment has started (we cannot create permissions before your appointment begins).
  • b. The course you wish to take has an open seat (we cannot enter permissions if a course is closed; you will need to speak to the instructor or GSI).
  • c. You have access to a computer and can use the permission immediately.
    * We recommend coming into the SAA Office to complete this process – we will not be able to assist you via email.

Experiential Lab Credits

Students who are pursuing the Psychology concentration (General Psych) are only allowed to count up to a maximum of 6 credits of experiential/research lab toward their concentration. This includes any community labs, faculty research labs and/or thesis research courses. Please make an appointment with a Concentration Advisor to determine how these courses fit into your concentration plan.
