A Spanish cognate course is a course in which a majority of the content focuses on Hispanic studies, but which does not give instruction primarily in Spanish. The following courses have been identified as possible cognate courses for Spanish concentrators.

Important information about cognate credit:

  • Cognate credit is only allowed for the concentration. Students enrolled in the minor cannot use cognate credit.
  • Spanish concentrators are allowed to receive a maximum of three credits toward the concentration for one cognate course.
  • Spanish cognate courses count toward the Spanish concentration as either 300 or 400 level elective credit. The level of each approved cognate course is indicated in parenthesis, on the list below.
  • Before taking a course on this list as a cognate, you need to meet with a concentration advisor to obtain approval.

  • If you believe you have found a course not on this list that may count as a Spanish cognate, you should fill out a request form (pdf), obtain a copy of the syllabus for the class, and meet with a concentration advisor for approval.

  • PORTUG 415-Portuguese for Spanish Speakers counts as a 400-level elective, but does not count as a cognate. You may take this course as well as a cognate course for your concentration requirements. PORTUG 415 does not count for the minor.

  • RCNSCI 350 - Ecology, Development, and Conservation in Latin America - counts as a 300-level elective for the Spanish concentration or minor.
  • Check the U-M Time Schedule or the LSA Course Guide to see when these courses are offered.
