GRE (Graduate Record Examination) scores are required of all applicants who are native speakers of English.

Applicants to the Ph.D. programs in French, Italian, and Spanish should have GRE score reports sent directly to the Rackham School of Graduate Studies (there is no need to send a duplicate report to the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures).

Use 1839 for the Institution Code.

Be sure to schedule your exam so your scores will be received by the department by the January 1st deadline.

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery) scores are required of all applicants who are non-native speakers of English. There is no need to send a duplicate report to Rackham if you have earned a previous degree at an institution whose language of instruction is English however, a report is still required by the department.

MINIMUM TOEFL/MELAB SCORE REQUIREMENTS:

TOEFL:
Paper/Pencil Exam = 600
Computer Exam = 240
iBT = 84

MELAB: 85

To have score reports sent to the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures, use 1839 for the Institution Code, and either 16 (French), 10 (Italian), or 23 (Spanish) for the Department Code. To have score reports sent directly to Rackham, use only the Institution code (1839) and leave the Department Code blank.
