Thank you for your interest in working as a Graduate Student Instructor in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures. Our Department seeks applications from graduate students qualified to teach elementary French or Spanish language.

GSI’s in our elementary language program, under the direction of the Course Coordinator, implement course curriculum following an established syllabus, meet class and administer exams according to schedule set by Coordinator, hold office hours, and follow established grading criteria. Instructors must participate in course meetings, orientation sessions (new instructors must attend our Orientation Workshop, a weeklong session held at the end of August) and individual meetings with Coordinators as requested. These positions are .50 appointments.

Individual languages have selection committees that review all applications and make hiring decisions based upon the needs of the Department and the enrollment in elementary language courses. In making decisions, the Committee considers competence to teach in particular courses (native or near-native fluency in a language); academic qualifications (prior college record and current academic record); and prior teaching performance (teaching evaluations and/or supervisor evaluations).

Doctoral students in Romance Languages receive priority consideration for open GSI positions. The Department may hire students from a variety of programs across the College and University, but graduate students in Romance Languages normally have priority over others. Graduate students who have previously taught in Romance Languages normally receive priority consideration as well.

Open positions will be posted on the Instructional Position Postings page. Click here.
